    On the pinning strategy of complex networks

    In pinning control of complex networks, a tacit believing is that the system dynamics will be better controlled by pinning the large-degree nodes than the small-degree ones. Here, by changing the number of pinned nodes, we find that, when a significant fraction of the network nodes are pinned, pinning the small-degree nodes could generally have a higher performance than pinning the large-degree nodes. We demonstrate this interesting phenomenon on a variety of complex networks, and analyze the underlying mechanisms by the model of star networks. By changing the network properties, we also find that, comparing to densely connected homogeneous networks, the advantage of the small-degree pinning strategy is more distinct in sparsely connected heterogenous networks

    Recycling of solvent used in a solvent extraction of petroleum hydrocarbons contaminated soil.

    The application of water washing technology for recycling an organic composite solvent consisting of hexane and pentane (4:1; TU-A solvent) was investigated for extracting total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) from contaminated soil. The effects of water volume, water temperature, washing time and initial concentration of solvent were evaluated using orthogonal experiments followed by single factor experiments. Our results showed that the water volume was a statistically significant factor influencing greatly the water washing efficiency. Although less important, the other three factors have all increased the efficacy of water washing treatment. Based on a treatment of 20g of contaminated soil with a TPH concentration of 140mgg(-1), optimal conditions were found to be at 40°C, 100mL water, 5min washing time and 660mgg(-1) solvent. Semi-continuous water extraction method showed that the concentration of the composite solvent TU-A was reduced below 15mgg(-1) d.w. soil with a recovery extraction efficiency >97%. This finding suggests that water washing is a promising technology for recycling solvent used in TPH extraction from contaminated soil

    A New Visualization-oriented Knowledge Service Platform

    AbstractWith the rapid growth of knowledge resources and increasing individual demands of users, the problem of how to spend less effort finding knowledge they need has been becoming more and more important. The visualization-oriented knowledge service platform is presented, which includes knowledge acquisition, knowledge categories, knowledge processing, knowledge storage and knowledge visualization. The platform aims to further transfer insights, experiences, attitudes, values, expectations, perspectives, opinions, and predictions by using various complementary visualizations. That is, by using knowledge mapping techniques a large and complex set of knowledge resources can be assimilated and navigated more easily. A prototype system of visual knowledge service has been implemented and applied to the massive knowledge organization, management and service for education

    Influence and interactions of multi-factors on the bioavailability of PAHs in compost amended contaminated soils

    Compost amendment to contaminated soils is a potential approach for waste recycling and soil remediation. The relative importance and interactions of multiple factors on PAH bioavailability in soils were investigated using conjoint analysis and five-way analysis of variance. Results indicated that soil type and contact time were the two most significant factors influencing the PAH bioavailability in amended soils. The other two factors (compost type and ratio of compost addition) were less important but their interactions with other factors were significant. Specifically the 4-factor interactions showed that compost addition stimulated the degradation of high molecular PAHs at the initial stage (3 month) by enhancing the competitive sorption within PAH groups. Such findings suggest that a realistic decision-making towards hydrocarbon bioavailability assessment should consider interactions among various factors. Further to this, this study demonstrated that compost amendment can enhance the removal of recalcitrant hydrocarbons such as PAHs in contaminated soils

    Evolutionary Subnetworks in Complex Systems

    Links in a practical network may have different functions, which makes the original network a combination of some functional subnetworks. Here, by a model of coupled oscillators, we investigate how such functional subnetworks are evolved and developed according to the network structure and dynamics. In particular, we study the case of evolutionary clustered networks in which the function of each link (either attractive or repulsive coupling) is updated by the local dynamics. It is found that, during the process of system evolution, the network is gradually stabilized into a particular form in which the attractive (repulsive) subnetwork consists only the intralinks (interlinks). Based on the properties of subnetwork evolution, we also propose a new algorithm for network partition which is distinguished by the convenient operation and fast computing speed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Part-Aware Product Design Agent Using Deep Generative Network and Local Linear Embedding

    In this study, we present a data-driven generative design approach that can augment human creativity in product shape design with the objective of improving system performance. The approach consists of two modules: 1) a 3D mesh generative design module that can generate part-aware 3D objects using variational auto-encoder (VAE), and 2) a low-fidelity evaluation module that can rapidly assess the engineering performance of 3D objects based on locally linear embedding (LLE). This approach has two unique features. First, it generates 3D meshes that can better capture surface details (e.g., smoothness and curvature) given individual parts’ interconnection and constraints (i.e., part-aware), as opposed to generating holistic 3D shapes. Second, the LLE-based solver can assess the engineering performance of the generated 3D shapes to realize real-time evaluation.
